#Regional News: Shillong, Meghalaya, June 8, 2023 On June 7, C.M. Conrad K. Sangma stated that the Umiam Hydro Power Project is on the verge of shutting down. Due to the fact that the water level at Meghalaya’s Umiam dam used in producing hydroelectric electricity is at its lowest and is at the point of shutting down, Meghalaya state is facing long load-shedding hours.
C.M. Sangma added that “it (Umiam Dam) is almost at a point of shutting down as the state has not been receiving the required rainfall in the past few months, adding that this has been one of the most difficult months in terms of rain for the state”.
“If the present situation continues in the next 100 days, C.M. Sangma will ensure that the load-shedding doesn’t go beyond this and his government will have to spend an additional Rs 300 crore to buy power”, said C.M. Sangma as he explained the “difficult situation” faced by the state now.
